Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysians will still pay RM1.99 per litre for RON95 under Budi95 even if the fuel subsidy bill rises to RM42 billion to RM45 billion a year. He said the government is prepared to absorb the higher cost rather than pass it to motorists.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysians will continue paying RM1.99 per litre for RON95 under Budi95, even if the government’s fuel subsidy bill rises to between RM42 billion and RM45 billion a year.
He made the remarks on 24 October 2026 at the Sentuhan Kasih Madani programme and the launch of the National Cost of Living Action Plan 2030 in Krubong, Melaka. He said global crude oil prices have risen to about US$120 to US$130 per barrel, compared with around US$70 previously.
Anwar said it is better for the government to bear the added burden than to pass higher petrol costs to the public. He said charging market prices would add a few ringgit a day for many Malaysians, and more for those who drive daily to work and school runs.
The article notes that this latest estimate is higher than the RM40 billion figure Anwar gave earlier in October, and above the amount allocated under Budget 2026. It also says the monthly fuel subsidy bill has moved up and down this year as oil prices changed.
What it means for you: if you are eligible for Budi95, RON95 is still expected to stay at RM1.99 per litre, so your daily fuel cost should not change for now.
