Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Rapid Bus will acquire 1,600 electric buses in stages by 2031. The fleet is intended to replace part of Rapid KL’s and Rapid Penang’s diesel buses.
According to the report, the first phase covers 250 buses, split between 175 units for Rapid KL and 75 units for Rapid Penang, with a total cost of RM200 million.
Loke said the first 150 buses are already being delivered in stages from June 2026 until the end of this year. A second batch of 100 buses is expected to start arriving in January 2027 and be completed by March 2027.
He also said 150 chargers will be installed at nine depots in the first stage, including three in Penang. Another 100 chargers will be provided at six depots in the second stage, including two in Penang. As of October 13, Rapid Bus had received 52 EV buses so far.
What it means for you: More electric buses on the road should support cleaner and potentially quieter public transport, especially in Klang Valley and Penang.
