Transport Minister Anthony Loke has encouraged local app developers to make use of open public transport data to build applications that can help commuters plan their trips more efficiently.

According to the report, the Ministry of Transport has maintained an open data policy for several years, allowing interested parties to access public transport information for app development.

Loke said the ministry’s data mainly covers public transport. He added that road-related data falls under other agencies, including the Works Ministry and the Public Works Department.

He also said Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has made several datasets available to the public, including daily passenger numbers, train frequency and service schedules.

What it means for you: Malaysians may see more local transport apps with better route, schedule and crowding information if developers use the available government data.
