Malaysia’s Cabinet has agreed to amend the abandoned vehicle management guidelines to speed up towing and disposal. The changes are meant to improve coordination between agencies and clarify enforcement powers.

The Malaysian Cabinet has agreed to amend the guidelines for managing abandoned vehicles, with the aim of speeding up removal and disposal work nationwide. The decision was announced by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil after the Cabinet meeting on October 30, 2026.

According to Bernama, the proposal came from the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) and the Transport Ministry (MOT) after complaints and feedback that the current procedure takes too long and needs better coordination between agencies.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said KPKT is also reviewing whether existing legal provisions need to be strengthened to deal with abandoned vehicles more effectively.

The planned changes are meant to clarify each authority’s jurisdiction and speed up enforcement and disposal, while still protecting vehicle owners’ rights.

What it means for you: local councils may be able to clear abandoned cars faster, which should help free up parking spaces and reduce long-standing eyesores in housing areas.
